Dr Catteeuw chose to sub-specialise early and built his training around the surgeons who wrote the techniques he now uses. Belgium for the foundations, Geneva for the sports knee, Lyon for replacement and the ligament work that reduces re-injury.

Why the lineage matters

Knee surgery is not one skill. Ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair, osteotomy and arthroplasty are each taught in different centres by different people, and most surgeons train deeply in one or two. Dr Catteeuw's fellowships cover all four, which is what allows him to offer a patient the option that suits the knee rather than the option he happens to do.

The Lyon and Santy fellowships are the reason he performs anterolateral procedures alongside ACL reconstruction in patients at higher risk of re-rupture, and robotic-assisted partial and total replacement when arthritis has progressed past preservation.
